How to Eliminate Pet Odors in Your Home

Even if you brush and bathe your pets on a regular basis, pet odors can still build up in your home over time. Unfortunately, many common air fresheners and other pet odor products only mask these smells temporarily. Some also have harsh chemicals that aren’t good for you and your pets. These natural cleaning remedies can help you eliminate pet odor in a pet-safe manner.

Homemade Disinfectant

Pet odors can accumulate in your home due to bacteria. Getting rid of bacteria with some thorough cleaning helps remove these odors. You can make your own disinfectant with some vinegar and water. To make it, mix a cup of distilled white vinegar with two cups of water. If you want to add a more pleasant scent to this disinfectant, add up to ten drops of lavender or another essential oil of your choice. Add this mixture to a spray bottle, then shake it before using it on hard surfaces in your home, including litter boxes.

Natural Carpet Cleaner

When your pets have accidents on carpeting, cleaning them as quickly as possible helps remove pet odors and lowers the risk of having them linger. For a natural carpet cleaner, mix white vinegar with water and spray it on the stained area. Use paper towels to blot the area, then let it dry. If the stain doesn’t go away and you still have pet odors, sprinkle baking soda on the affected area. Let it sit for roughly five minutes before vacuuming it up. Keep in mind that you should test this on a small part of your carpet first to make sure it won’t discolor it.

Pet Bedding Cleaner

Pet bedding can harbor odors that won’t go away just by running a vacuum cleaner over them. To eliminate pet odors in beds and blankets, you’ll need to sprinkle baking soda all over them first. You can also spray drops of water and a diluted essential oil, such as peppermint, as long as it’s pet-safe and your pets aren’t sensitive to it. Let the baking soda sit for a few hours, then thoroughly vacuum your pet bedding using the crevice attachment.
