10 Pet Safe Fruits and Berries

Fruits and berries can be a refreshing snack for people, especially in the summer heat, but what about pets? Several fruits and berries are considered safe for pets to eat. These foods also provide pets with important nutrients. If you’re looking for fruits and berries to give your dog or cat as a healthy treat, consider the following.

Pets can have watermelon as long as you remove the seeds and rind before giving it to them. Watermelon contains vitamins A, B6, and C, as well as potassium. The large amount of water in these fruits can also help ensure that pets have enough hydration in the summer heat.

Apples are considered safe for pets to eat, but you should take out the core and seeds first. Apples are a good source of fiber, and they also contain vitamin A and vitamin C.

Blueberries are a great snack for pets to have. These berries have antioxidants, which help prevent damage to cells. Blueberries have high amounts of fiber as well for healthy digestion.

Pets can eat strawberries, although they should be given in moderation due to their sugar content. Strawberries contain antioxidants, as well as vitamin C and fiber.

Raspberries are generally safe for pets in limited amounts. These berries contain sugar and natural xylitol, which can be toxic to dogs in high amounts. Raspberries have vitamin C, antioxidants, manganese, and fiber, as well as anti-inflammatory properties.

Pets can have cranberries as a snack in small amounts. These berries contain antioxidants, fiber, and several vitamins, including vitamin C and vitamin E.

Bananas can be a nutritious snack for pets, but they should only have small amounts of this fruit. While bananas contain fiber, potassium, and vitamins, they also have a high amount of sugar.

You can give your pets peaches to eat after taking the pit out. Small amounts of these sugary fruits provide pets with vitamin A and fiber.

Mangoes can make good treats for pets in small amounts, but make sure to remove the pit first. These fruits contain potassium, alpha-carotene, beta-carotene, vitamin C, and other nutrients, but they also have a higher sugar content.

Cantaloupe chunks can be given to pets as treats, but limit the amount you give them due to their sugar content. These fruits contain a lot of water for hydration, as well as fiber for healthy digestion.

Fruits to Avoid

While many fruits are safe for pets, some should be avoided. Don’t give dogs or cats grapes or raisins to eat, even in small amounts. These fruits can cause digestive problems and kidney failure in pets. You should also avoid giving cats citrus fruits, such as lemons or oranges, which can cause serious health problems. Cherries are not considered safe for pets, since their size makes them a choking hazard and the pits contain cyanide.
